Explanation of the Sustainability Awareness Framework

• This framework aims to help identify the sustainability impacts of IT products and services on the five dimensions of sustainability across three orders of effect.
• Before we jump into the course let's define what we define as sustainability in this context. There are many different sustainability definitions for different purposes. In the broadest sense, sustainability refers to the ability to maintain or support a process continuously over time. In business and policy contexts, sustainability seeks to prevent the depletion of resources, so that they will remain available for the long term. Here, we will mostly focus on the fivefold split of sustainability into different dimensions in order to raise awareness about potential areas where your company could affect the needs of future generations. These include:
• The environmental dimension is about conserving natural resources or protecting ecosystems now and in the future
• The economic dimension is concerned with finance, profit, and investment.
• The social dimension covers relationships between individuals and groups.
• The individual dimension focuses on the maintenance of individual human capital.
• The technical dimension refers to the maintenance and evolution, of the resilience of IT products, services, or software systems.
